Solutions for urban communities

Valbio has designed, built and commissioned more than 100 WWT plants for small urban communities (up to 3000 inhabitants equivalent) . The systems designed by Valbio feature biological processes with low energy consumption.

Valbio has experience in all the technologies required to optimise the biological WWT depending on the requirements, expectations, land resources and budget of urban communities.

  • reed planted filters
  • biological discs (distribution of S&P System modules)
  • activated sludge
  • water line processes
  • physico-chemical treatments

Valbio is developing economical and ecological solutions, based on its anaerobic digestion expertise, for urban communities located in tropical areas and for holiday resorts with high seasonal variations in population.

These tropical & seasonal WWT include a Valbio Methacore digester to treat urban effluents and produce biogas, that can be used to make hot or cold water (air conditioning) to meet the needs of the neighbouring tourist infrastructure (hotels, ...). The high tolerance of the Valbio Methacore digesters to seasonality in the inbound effluent volumes allow these WWT to ramp up in a few week's time before the high tourist season, and to go back to sleep during the colder, lower affluence periods of the year.

CASE STUDY
  • Process municipal waste water for 600 IH
  • Objectives :
    • Maximum flow 15 m3/h
    • DBO5 (60 g/day/EH) 36 kg/d
    • DCO (140 g/day/EH) 84 kg/d
    • TSS (90 g/day/EH) 54 kg/d
    • NTK (15 g/day/EH) 9 kg/d
Solution
  • Aerobic treatment of effluents using 4 biological discs modules
  • Clarification using 2 lamellar decanters.
  • Storage, stabilisation and dehydration of sludge in a reed planted filter

REFERENCE- Cuq Toulza (France) municipal WWTP - Reed planted filter - 500 IH

CASE STUDY
  • 500 inhabitants equivalent (IH) town, with planned extension to 1000 IH
  • Regulatory requirements (French law passed on June 22nd, 2007) to treat domestic waste water :
  • 60 kg COD / day
  • Requirement for a reliable, sturdy, easy to operate WWTP
Solution
  • Reed planted filter WWTP :
  • Filtration of suspended solids
  • Aerobic biological degradation of dissolved organic matter
  • 2 m2 surface for each IH
  • Project :1 month study + 3 months construction

RESULTS

Removal efficiency :
BOD5 : removal > 60%
COD : removal > 60%
TSS : removal > 50%

Planted reeds : landscape integration
Aerobic process without stagnation : no bad smells
